Queen Rose Hiking Trail is situated 30kms outside of Barberton, Mpumalanga. It is enclosed by the majestic mountains of the Eastern escarpment and is privileged to bear the meeting point between the Queens and Montrose rivers. The trail runs the majority of its distance across the Komatiland forestry land which is run and maintained privately.
Queen Rose offers hiking, bird watching, walks.

Slackpack:
R120 per person there and back. 1 Item per person. A cooler box counts as an item. Slack pack to be arranged prior to the hike with the owner/caretakers. Payable in cash to caretakers on arrival
Wood:
R50 per wheelbarrow. To be arranged with the owner/caretakers prior to the hike. Payable in cash to the caretakers on arrival.

Day hikes:
2 Day – Queen View Camp to Matumi Bush Camp and back to Queen View Camp
3 Day – Nelshooge Forestry Station Log Cabin to Queen View Camp to Matumi Camp and back to Nelshoogte
4 Day – Nelshooge Forestry Station Log Cabin to Queen View Camp to Matumi Camp to Queen View Camp and back to Nelshoogte
Trail options are:
To stay at the log cabin and explore Devils Knuckles, a mountain edge that divides Nelshoogte and the Barberton Basin. It has similar views to Kaapsche Hoop with views over the Barberton valley, a vertical drop of up to 500m on most knuckles. It also offers two separate dams for those interested in bass fishing.
Hike the 11km Devils Knuckles Trail to Queens Base Camp (It has an option passing a waterfall and a natural pool to cool down), overnight there and then do the 14km Ou Kraal and Matumi day trail. Overnight the second night at Queens Base Camp and hike back the third day to Nelshoogte Log Cabin.
Hike the 11km Devils Knuckles Trail to Queens Base Camp on day one (It has an option passing a waterfall and a natural pool to cool down), overnight at Queens Base Camp and then do the 16km Montrose Trail on day two, overnight at theMatumi Camp/Log Cabins, walk the 10km Matumi Lane trail back to Queens Base Camp on day three, overnight at Queens Base Camp and hike on the 11km Devels Knuckles Trail on day four back to the Nelshoogte Log Cabin.
Options are to add a night before or after at Nelshoogte Forestry Cabin
Accommodation
(SELF CATERING BRING OWN BEDDING AND TOWELS)
Caters for Schools groups as well In terms of accommodation, there are namely two overnight huts, namely Queens View and Delfonte. The direction of the route is interchangeable.
NELSHOOGTE FORESTRY STATION LOG CABIN:
Sleeps 15
An old style forestry log cabin that has been fully revamped inside.
- Fully self catering – kitchen with a stove, microwave, fridge, all pots and pans and crockery
- 3 rooms with single and bunkers beds with mattress protectors, bring your own bedding,
- 1 toilet and 1 shower
- Wood fired braai with a big outside area/lawn.
QUEEN VIEW CAMP:
Queen View House – sleeps 18 (Extra mattresses can be arranged as there is ample space)
2 Showers and 1 Bath. 3 Toilets
Plaashuis – sleeps 16 (Extra mattresses can be arranged as there is ample space)
2 Showers and 2 Toilets
Both houses has:
- Electricity
- Fully equipped kitchens (fridge, stove, microwave, kettle and cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery)
- Hot showers, flush toilets
- Comfortable beds with good mattresses
Dorms: Various dorms, sleeps in total approx. 40

Matumi Bush Camp
Sleeps 28 pax with request up to max 40 pax.
4 Log Cabins sleeping 7 each. (Can be increased to 10 pax on request)

- 2 x Hot showers – gas geysers
- Boma and braai area
- Cutlery and crockery
- Kettle
- 2 x Flush toilets
- Beds with mattresses
- Bring own bedding
- Gas Cooker – 2 Plate
- The water is safe for consumption as it is from a spring not far from the Cabin and not pumped from the Queens River any more.
- Wood to be purchased at R50 per wheelbarrow, to be arranged with the caretakers and paid in cash
The Matumi Bush Camp Cabin has solar electricity, hot water showers and flush toilets. It has 4 rooms with 7 beds in each. Hikers will need to bring their own bedding and food as it was at Delfonté.
